Today, I would like to talk about basic maintenance that many can do on their own vehicles, such as engine air and cabin filters, windshield wiper blades, and setting your tire pressure.
Cabin Air Filter
Many modern vehicles now have cabin air filters installed behind the glove box. The cabin filter
is designed to trap debris before it enters the air box to prevent dust and dirt from blowing through the vents. If the cabin filter is clogged, it will reduce the airflow. This can cause problems such as extended time for the windshield to defrost in the winter and the air conditioning not blowing as cold as it should. Many of these cabin filters are easy to access and replace. I recommend verifying where your cabin filter is located and doing some homework on how to remove the glove box, as some tools may be needed. There are several brands of cabin filters to choose from. Engine Air Filters
Engine air filters can get dirty between engine oil and filter change services. A dirty air filter can affect how the engine runs and idles, as there is not enough airflow. This can also cause problems with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor or the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, leading to drivability issues. Many of these filters are easily accessible. Some tools may be required depending on how the air box cover is installed, such as an 8 or 10-millimeter socket and a 1/4 or 3/8 drive ratchet to remove the cover and snorkel. Some air filter housings just have clips, while others require tools such as a Phillips, Torx, or flathead screwdriver. I recommend doing your homework before removing your engine air filter and verifying you have the correct filter on hand. Windshield Wiper Blades
Windshield wiper blades can sometimes be a little difficult to replace, but many manufacturers of wiper blades provide instructions on how to remove and replace them. Having good quality front wiper blades and a rear wiper blade, if your vehicle is equipped with one, is important for good visibility in rain, winter, and snowy conditions. It is important to replace your wiper blades with the correct blade that will do the job depending on the climate you are driving in. If your wiper blades still look like they are in good condition but are leaving streaks on your windshield, you can clean them with a little white vinegar and warm water. Use either a microfiber cloth or a small detailing brush and lightly clean the rubber part of the blade that touches the windshield, then rinse off the blades. I also suggest cleaning the windshield before testing to verify no more streaks. Tire Pressure
Tire pressure can affect how your vehicle handles and, over time, can cause premature tire wear. It is important to check your tire pressure at least once a month. Most vehicles will have a sticker on the driver's front door or the pillar that faces the rear of the vehicle, indicating how much air is needed in the front and rear tires, such as 30 PSI front and 32 PSI rear. Please note some manufacturers may display kPa or BAR for tire pressure. It is important to either convert to PSI or purchase a tire pressure gauge that displays kPa or BAR.
